Last week, I took to my Instagram stories asking my audience to share any questions they might have about Finola Jewelry.

The response was astounding; I was overwhelmed by the interest that was taken in how things are run around here, and how Finola came to be.

Below, you’ll find the answers to some of the questions submitted about my business. If you have a question that wasn’t addressed, feel free to email me or send me a message on Instagram!

“HOW ARE YOU INSPIRED TO CREATE EACH PIECE?”

Sometimes I look to current fashion trends fashion trends to inform my designs, but don’t rely on them. Instead, I tend to create what I personally like, and what I can see myself or my friends wearing every day, and have expanded Finola Jewelry from that concept. As my own personal style develops, I am finding what exactly works for my business and what just doesn’t quite fit.

“WHAT’S THE MOST EXCITING PIECE OF JEWELRY YOU’VE MADE?”

I’m not sure I can choose just one! ALL of the jewelry that I make is exciting to me…

However, last year I designed a necklace for a bride who reached out looking for a custom necklace for her wedding. For this necklace, I used her grandfather’s old watch, her grandmother’s pearls, a sweet vintage brooch, and a few other miscellaneous/sentimental pieces. All-in-all, this piece was everything that the bride wanted, and the whole process was interesting from the start. I was so excited to give the final product to her, but I was definitely sad when it was over!

“WHAT DID YOU STUDY IN COLLEGE?”

Funny answer to that question, I didn’t!

When I was in my early teens, I started working at a small, locally owned bead store in Bellevue, KY. I stayed there for well over 10 years- I LOVED that job and nothing ever felt quite so perfectly aligned with me as a person. After graduating high school- and not quite feeling passionate about one area of studies or another- I went to college and studied Occupational Therapy. That didn’t last long, however, and I soon after leaving college, found myself “speed dating” a random assortment of dead-end jobs.

After a brain-storming session on a road-trip up the PCH with my boyfriend, I decided to get back to my roots- and started Finola Jewelry soon after!

“WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST FEAR WHEN YOU STARTED FINOLA?”

That no one would buy anything!

I remember announcing that my site was live and sitting back, thinking, “What if no one buys anything??” After just a few hours, I already had orders coming in from supportive family and friends. I even received an unexpected order from a woman in Brooklyn, NY who had just found my new website by accident. She’s now a regular supporter, and we’ve even become good friends! The support and excitement I have received for my jewelry brand has been above and beyond my wildest dreams, and it’s only getting better from here!

“WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?”

I absolutely love what I do.

Creating something tangible, and being able to share it with people who genuinely appreciate it is SO fulfilling.  I am happiest when I’m working at home, holed up in my cozy space designing jewelry and filling orders. But, I also love the flexibility that owning your own business allows.  I am VERY lucky that I can make my own hours and that I get to spend the days doing what I enjoy the most.

“WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE WITH YOUR WORK?”

My current biggest challenge is training myself to find a balance between work and rest. Since my jewelry studio is in my house, I have trouble walking away from unfinished work. In fact, I often feel guilty if I’m home on the weekend and I’m not making jewelry or answering emails!

“WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR MATERIALS?”

I think that it is very VERY important to support other small businesses, so I try to buy my jewelry materials locally or on Etsy. This way, I’m supporting other jewelers AND helping keep my own costs low since I’m not paying over-seas shipping/handling costs.

“WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER DOING A BRIDAL LINE?”

I have had the pleasure of working with a countless number brides. It’s one of my favorite parts of the job! While I don’t have a separate website for bridal jewelry, I am always open to creating custom wedding pieces for brides and their bridal parties. Check out @finolajewelry.bridal to see a few of the wedding pieces I’ve made in the past year.

I’ve had several people who want something “different” or less traditional for their weddings, so it’s always fun working to create something unique, something that helps tell a story.
